221: Full-width Turn Coordinator

I am supposed to complete the Turning Off the FIP series for the remaining Tachometer C172_TCCLKand the Integrated Fuel Gauges in this two weeks.  Instead, here’s my first attempt utilizing the full resolution (320 x 240) of the FIP for the Turn Coordinator, plus OAT and Local & Zulu Time Clock with Time Zone Offset.

Both features had been missing from my previous gauge development and they’ve been frequently requested by friends of FSX Times.

The overall layout of this “integrated gauge approach” doesn’t look jammed to me, even though the text area for buttons on the left is gone.  The result could be said quite promising to my intention of putting all C172 panel instruments onto my seven FIPs as stated in Post 216.

However, packing more than one gauges onto a single FIP would unavoidably lead to a result that might be highly customized for my own person needs.   For example, I have included the switches to this gauge again, and they are also slightly different from and minimized compared to those rendered in my earlier Tachometer design.   Fortunately, users could still choose my other Tachometer version which doesn’t have switch indicators.

Unfortunately, the Voltage feature I tried to include doesn’t respond to the changes in the aircraft at all even though the initial reading is correct.  Also, I am unable to put the Stop Watch onto the FIP since the FIP doesn’t recognize many standard XML commands that are common in gauge development.

If any of you knows how to implement the Voltage and Stop Watch features onto the FIP, please share with us.

This is a major objectives I am trying to encourage among fellow simmers while I am sharing my own via this blog.

I welcome FSX Times Subscribers to ask for the download link via the COMMENT section below as before.  However, I am now expecting an email reply to the link I send or a “Like” to the post.  I regard it as a basic etiquette among us all.

Non-FSX Times subscribers should subscribe to this blog first and then notify me for their requests.  Edit: This instrument is no more available.

  1. Hello Tom. Fantastic work and you should sell this to Saitek as their off the shelf FIP layouts or too basic compared to yours.
Would you mind to send me the files required to achieve your ultra-realistic results?

Also, are there developing tools available to make ones own FIP layouts.

Again it is people like yourself that driver realism!

    1. Hi there Tom. Sorry that I ask this question here! I have been trying to re assign the keys on my keypad to operate the gps as you suggested in an earlier post. I cannot seem to be able to re assign the enter key. Do I need to do this? or does it work as is. ( Seeing that it already is an enter key) thank you, regards Eugene

      2. Hi Eugene,
Ensure you have selected “Mouse Yoke” in Controller type under BUTTONS/KEYS of the Settings screen.
You may also modify the Standar.XML file in the Controls folder where the fsx.CFG is located (normally: C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX )
Backup the file first, then open it with notepad. Search for F24
The content may look like something as follows:
        F24
        RUDDER_RIGHT
        Replace RUDDER_RIGHT with GPS_ENTER_BUTTON
        That should work.

  3. Hello Tom,
I think I also missed your new wide version of the Turn Coord with the Temps and Switches. Looks interesting. Please send a dl link.

I have 8 total FIPs so I am following your grouping for your seven with great interest. I love those little things like adding the Flap settings and TAS. Well, I guess they are not little things at all but they sure are useful improvements to the gauges.

BTW, a special thanks for updating the Citation Airspeed gauge with TAS and needle width. Very nice touches. I have been flying the F1 Citation Mustang a lot recently and although it is slower than the Citation X the gauge still works great for those two and my ESDG CJ1+.

You need to step up to pure jets one day. It is a whole new world at those altitudes and speeds.

  8. Hi Tom, Can you send link please. I also have been iterating/writing FIP gauges for Beech Duchess configuration. I have 18 FIPs active in my setup, display is over 4x 27″ monitors (ATI) and run 2x 7″ touchscreens for GPS & TCAS. Took awhile to get the right switched USB hub setup going to get all 18 FIPs to load up in the correct order each time … basically your instructions on a single hub with data line kill switches added to start and stop Hubs on the PC. Will post some photos in your cockpit area soon. Thanks

      2. Thanks Michael. They are great now that I understand how they work. I had not changed the name of the gauges on the xml doc. I must just shorten the command names on the left of the fip as they get covered by gauge if too long. Thanks Tom. Do you have an attitude indicator yet? thanks Michael for input! I am pretty close to going back to the ‘rather unstable’ FSX. Well, on my system anyway!

I personally don’t mind losing the text labels for the buttons. I’ve being working on the programming of my buttons, and am getting them memorized quickly. (I only end up using 3-4 buttons on average flights)

Please send me the link, and keep up the great work!

      1. Hi Tom, awesome. looks almost as fresh as the real thing! Tom, I have been all over the internet, trying to find a C172 wetcompass setup for the FIP. Without success. I have no clue on how to program this, but the movement would differ to the other instruments since it there are no dials, just the numbers “travel” of course. Should you ever ever have the time and the fun, could you consider this as a project? I would love to use 1 FIP ontop of the dashboard as compass, and switch quickly to other info from there…. thanks! keep it up! Nils

  13. Hello again Tom,

I tried to “like” your page but I get redirected to the WordPress.com login page. And then I can’t login neither can I reset my my password because my email is not listed in the WordPress.com database. This is strange because I subscribed to your blog on August 24 this year and you sent me the beautiful and efficient C172 gauges set on Sep. 13.
I had only three FIPs installed at that time. And I acquired two more FIPs recently to take better advantage of your great gauges.

I hope I did nothing wrong by trying to “like” your blog and by attempting to login to WordPress.com several time. And I apologize for any inconvenience caused.

I want to thank you for the best FSX blog I ever saw on the web. Thanks for all your tips, gauges and your great work.

I have modified and also built a few gauges myself for FSX and for the FIP as well. But my FIP gauges are very basic towards yours. I made a Turn Coordinator a few weeks ago. It’s working fine but once again it is far away from your new great looking gauge.

I would be delighted if you would send me the link to your new Turn Coordinator.

Thanks and best regards from LSGS.
