188: Cessna 172 AirSpeed Gauge

This Cessna 172 Airspeed Gauge has been requested by many fans of FSX Times.  So it finally arrives.  Despite its simple look, it did take me quite some time to layout it properly, however.C172_AirSpeed_BackgroundW

The TAS knob on the bottom left corner, unfortunately, is still a decoration.   I haven’t figured out how to make it function yet.   Besides that, it is fully functional.

Subscribers of FSX Times who are interested in this gauge could send me a request via the COMMENTS section below as usual for the download link.

Others who aren’t subscribers yet could enter their emails and press the [Enter Your Email to Subscribe] button on the right hand column to become a subscriber first.   Otherwise, requests will be ignored.

  2. Hi Tom,
Understand your away for a bit – hope you enjoy your time away – you certainly deserve it. I’ve spent the last 5 hours reading your site and enjoying its many offerings. I registered for your newsletter, but I got an email saying my registration failed… even though I had a valid email address in the submittal form… hopefully that resolved itself. I am a private pilot, flying gliders, singles (C172 and DA40), and a R44 rotary. I have been flying flight sims since they were invented – Apple 2, IBM PC (running on a half-screen Toshiba laptop back there were no hard drives). And now I have a full Saitek setup with 6 FIPs, the Multi, Radio, Switch, and BIP.

I would love to have your C172 gauges for my setup and also any you might have for a Mooney, or small jet. I haven’t incorporated small monitors or iPads into my setup yet, just using a 70″ Sharp HD TV as my only display. Therefore when I fly the Mooney I use the G1000 panel and just use the TV for most all gauges. I’m looking to add some small displays to make this look even better.

I own a Garmin 696 that I take from plane to plane and would really like to interface it to my FSX setup. I have found a few links and articles about that, but most are older. Have you ever been asked this? I find the FSX GPS systems extremely cumbersome to use with no keyboard shortcuts for the various buttons – my goal for my Flight Sim is to have little or no interaction with a mouse or keyboard other than the initial flight setup. The best article I found discusses the 696 accepting “outside” GPS POS data but the real desire for me is to use the 696 as an input device and thus make my cockpit somewhat complete!

I’ve spent a lot of time surfing Sim websites for Saitek info and when I found yours I said “Finally, a site for me”. Thanks for all you do. I WOULD like to contribute to you so that your are incentivized to press on with all your fun ideas. How about a PayPal link so that folks can just contribute what they want?

Again, best wishes – hope your time away was for holiday. Saitek should come visit you and get new product ideas – perhaps higher def displays, new switch panels, or even (gasp) a true Garmin GPS Sim Panel (500 series or 1000/2000).

      1. Hi Mathias,
Links have been sent to you mailbox. Do note that A2A 172 doesn’t fully compatible with standard FSX commands. So some of the gauges I made were not functioning properly on this aircraft.

      2. Thanks! Haven`t got any email yet but i guess it would arrive soon. I did notice that the A2A Cessna gauges diden`t match with the FIPs so I might dig into the .cfg and .xml files to fix it.

I’ll appreciate it very much if you could inform me how you fix those gauges for A2A. Many other people are facing the same issues.

I’ve recently subscribed to you site and wanted to let you know that its awesome. I’m very new to flight sim but am a real world pilot looking to get an IFR rating so am really interested in any and all gauge addons you have suitable for a C172 or C185. I’ll add a pic of my set up to the cockpits file soon.
        Love your work.

  7. Hi Tom,

I have just purchased some Saitek FIP’s. The standard panels do not seem very good. I have seen by surfing the net that you have made some nice alternate panels for the FIP’s. Can you please send me what panels you have made? I would like to eventually make my own gauges, so I thought I could study yours to help understand what is required.

    Thanks

  8. Tom,
Would you please send me the airspeed gauges for the FSX 172?
My stock gauge ,when lights on , has multiple pin holes of light shinning through

    Thanks

    1. No problem Rick. The link’s sent.
Don’t know if you have modified the stock gauge. The problem you mentioned seems to be created by improper saving format.
If you haven’t, maybe a hardware issue if the symptom appears on whatever gauge you are using.

    1. Hi Paul,
No, it’s not possible to get two pilots on the default C172 as far as I know. However, I remember some third party C172s (Carenada, flightone, not sure) offer a choice of 1 or 2 pilots on the plane.

I just noticed that you have me listed under my old account from last year even though your e-mail is comming to my newer account.

I think that the problem resulted from “auto fill” and have just changed it. Hope it works

  18. Hi Tom: I honestly don’t know how you do it. You’re a magician with FSX. I’ve used variations of your fsx.cfg entries for a long time and have incorporated many of them into my setup – I don’t understand them but THEY WORK! Many, many thanks! And I’d love to have the link for the 172 airspeed indicator. P.S. I’ve been a private pilot for over 30 years and your dedication to fsx has made my experiences with it so much closer to driving a 172 at 2500 feet over New Jersey.

I received and installed the C172 gauge. without any problems.

        Question:

“Others who aren’t subscribers yet could enter their emails and press the [Click Me to Subscribe] button on the right hand column to become a subscriber first. Otherwise, requests will be ignored.”

I must be stupid because I cannot find the place to write my email address and all I see is the GREEN BANNER on the right hand side which says SUBSCRIBE TO FSX TIMES which is inactive.

Sorry about this but I really would like to subscibe…!

    1. Tom,

thanks a lot for sending the link. Which five main instruments would you recommend to go with the new airpseed gauge for the C172? Would you suggest the Centurion gauges? The aritifical horizon (e.g.) might perhaps do well – what would you think? Saitek’s default instruments are plainly ugly compared to yours and don’t fit at all to your pretty airspeed gauge. Kind regards, Michael

      1. Hi Michael,
Just created a new section called “Gauge Collection for FIPs” under Hardware on the Menu. This is the place where I put all the gauges I made so far and where I will make in the future.
Although some gauges are marked for T210, they are generally good for other aircrafts as well if you don’t mind they look a little different from the cockpit you are seating. I believe you could select a set that best fits your preference.
