135: My Best fsx.CFG Update

As earlier reported in Post 133, my system got some positive results from increasing the value of TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT to 800.

Updated on May-4, 2012: However, dropping down the value from 800 to 400 brings a result that the setting is more compatible to my recent hardware changes.   Therefore, the value of TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT is now set to 400.

Here is the fsx.CFG for all my flying zones — Note that TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT is 400, not 800.

Updated items are highlighted in red.

NOTE:

  • The Anisotropic=1 setting should be good for most people.
  • But many others may find the result from TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=800 (which is good on my HD6970 card) differently with a different card.     Explore it yourself.
  • My previous fsx.CFG settings should still be good for general references.

    1. Hi Ircghost, there’s no download for these cfg files. I have listed all the changes made to the file so others could add them to their file accordingly. Before you do the changes, make sure to make a backup of your file first.

  1. Hi Tom,

I tried this tonight and it works a charm – I also changed it so that RivaTuner from MSI Afterburner limits my frames to 20/25 fps – this has made it so smooth and the scenery loads nicely without blurries etc.

I am going to post this on Mutley’s Hangar Forum as I am an active member there and know people would appreciate your information as long as it is ok with you?

    Cheers,
    Jim

      1. I definitely found the config setup useful – it has made my setup a lot smoother; although my frames did not increase it is now smoother so much better than what it was.

I find a lot of tutorials and tweaks for people with nvidia cards but not so much with ATI – Another tweak you could try is installing MSI Afterburner – you can use that to limit frames instead of FSX and this made my game perform better too – up to you?

        Cheers,
        Jim

      2. Hi Jim,
Glad to hear that my information helps. Yes, MSI Afterburner. I tried that one too with some positive results. But it was not stable on my ASUS hardware so I don’t use it anymore.

  3. Hi Tom.Do you think that when I upgrade my DDR2 667 mhz Ram to DDR2 1066 Mhz I will see a big improvement on FSX performance?
    Thanks

  4. Hi Tom.Can you tell me why you choose Auslogics Disk Defrag? Is it good defragmenter software?I see in many sim forums OO defrag use a lot of simmers.

  5. Dear Tom.No.I m busy this time too so I havent try MS Flight yet.Tom do you use any registry and windows cleaner software? And do you defragment your system with standart windows7 tool or you use third party software for defragment.I ask this questions because I think this very important for run FSX smothly too.

    1. I am using Windows 7 Manager & jv16 Power Tools for registry cleaning, and Auslogics Disk Defrag for defragmentation. If you install FSX on SSD, defrag is NOT required.

  6. Hi Tom.I applied HIGHMEMFIX=1 and SmallPartRejectRadius=2 to reduce occasionaly texture disappearing. Now I see that also on midrange system like me (core duo 3,3 ghz,4gb ram,AMD 6670 1gb) can get nice results of course on lower resolutions and with right settings follow your posts.
P.S.Tom have you ever try new Microsoft Flight demo?

    1. Thanks for the note, Charles. The two tweaks are standard in my fsx.CFG too.
No, I didn’t try MS Flight yet. Have you? Will do it later when I am less busy.

  7. Dear Tom.It seems that two little tweak work for me to reduce occasionaly texture disappearing andI have one another question about Gameboooster 3.Does it do good job for you in FSX?Are there any differents when you run FSX with or without GB3 ?
    Thanks

    1. Glad to hear that, Charles. Can you tell me which two little tweaks that fixed your occasional texture problem?
Regarding Gamebooster 3, although I am loading it every time I run FSX, I don’t really find much difference from not running it. But as a rule of thumb of running less is more, I keep loading it before FSX. It does no harm to FSX, too.

  8. Hi TOM.I tried to totally reinstall FSX and then configure my system step by step follow posts 87,88,89 and I am impressed with results.(I edit my cfg file only with vsync and [BufferPools]/.Fsx now run very smooth without microstutters.Only bad thing what I see is occasionaly texture disappearing. Can I fix this issue with HIGHMEMFIX=1 tweak?
    Thanks

    1. So glad to hear that you’ve got positive result. Yes, you could try the tweak to see if the occasionally texture be fixed. Also, SmallPartRejectRadius helps as well. You can find more details of them both from my posts. Update me if they help.

    1. Hi Charles,
Installing FSX on an SSD WILL NOT give you a smooth FSX performance. It only brings little improvement. However, it can shorten flight sessions load-up time significantly.

  9. Tom and what is your experience with occasionaly stutters when fps is relatively stable. What is cause of this stutters?

    Like

    1. FPS and stutters are two different things even though they are related. Stutters are caused by many factors and there are no single solution to solve it. As my Tuning Part 1 said, use the default fsx and graphics settings. See how FSX performs. In this stage, stutters should be less or none. Ensure this stage is ok.
Then step by step increase other parameters to get what you want.

  10. Hi Tom.I spent few days with tweaking and I found that my system like any cfg tweak.(Is it possible?)Only tweak seems useful for me was shader cache clear and force vsync (but when I applied this tweak I got a lot of stutters when I set fps unlimiited).Again my flight is nice smooth with stable fpsbut with occasionaly stutters even when I set autogen slider to the left.

    1. Hi Charles,
Please clarify if your system like or doesn’t like any tweak you applied?
For shade cache clear, you don’t have to do it every time. It is just required when you find your system becomes unable.
Vsync is particularly useful to AMD card. Are you using AMD card?
Frankly, I don’t like fps unlimited. I usually set mine from 39 to 47 which gives me a smooth performance.

      2. Hi Charles,
There is no simple answer to your question.
You have to try out one by one; from lower to higher; in order to get the best results for your system.
Also, as said, do not use unlimited framerate. Start with 29 or 31 to see how it goes. Then slowly increase or decrease your setting for the best you can get.
