36: Add New Views

The earlier post Remove Unwanted Views talks about getting rid of some views (cameras) that one doesn’t need.  This one talks about adding new views (cameras).

My system has a few Pro Flight Instrument Panels (FIPs); therefore, I want a full scenery monitor display without showing the 2D or 3D cockpit.

Although this can simply be achieved by pressing W to turn off associated panels in 2D cockpit view, the cockpit will appear again when eyepoints are panning to the right or to the left.

To address the issue, a number of options can be considered.

Option 1:

Change See_Self=1 to See_Self=0 in fsx.CFG

This will make all aircrafts disappeared at all time.  However, this option obviously is not ideal.

Option 2:

Remove the cockpit interior command line from the model.cfg of an aircraft.  For example in the Cessna 172

This will disable cockpit views of Cessna 172.  It is better than Option 1; however, it is still not the solution I want.

What if I don’t want to switch on the FIPs in a new flighsim session?  What if I need to check the status of other equipment during a flight?

Option 3:

Create (or modify) a camera that will render an unobstructed view from ahead to both sides.  Following is what I add the new view to my Cessna 172 aircraft.cfg:

Title = “Full Forward View”
Guid = {195EAB58-9E4A-4E2A-A34C-A8D9D948F078}
Origin = Virtual Cockpit
MomentumEffect = Yes
SnapPbhAdjust = Swivel
SnapPbhReturn = False
PanPbhAdjust = Swivel
PanPbhReturn = False
Track = None
ShowAxis = FALSE
AllowZoom = TRUE
InitialZoom = 0.6
SmoothZoomTime = 2.0
ZoomPanScalar = 1.0
ShowWeather = Yes
XyzAdjust = TRUE
Category = Cockpit
InitialXyz=0.25, 0.7, 2.0
InitialPbh=0, 0, 0

It is basically a duplication of the default Virtual Cockpit View Camera Definition but is realigned to a different position through the InitialXyz parameter.

The numerical value is measured in feet and is relative to the default pilot eyepoint position.

So simply speaking, this Full Forward View will create a new view (camera) that is 0.25 feet to the right, 0.7 feet above (outside of the aircraft) and 2.0 feet ahead of the default pilot eyepoint.

Through the tweaks of Adding and Removing Views described here, all my planes are now set to only show

1) Virtual Cockpit
2) Right Seat
3) Full Forward

All other views are removed or disabled.  This combination gives me a quick view switching on all airplanes.

  1. Hi Tom,

    Thanks for getting back to me. Following on from what you say, am I correct in thinking that using your method, I would be able to select the click able views in the 2D panel,R wing, L wing etc and convert them to click able views in the VC?

  2. Hi Tom,
    Thanks for the info re adding new views, is it possible to allocate the new views to keystrokes?

    Phil Murfin – UK

    1. Absolutely, Phil. At the end of Option 3 example shown in my post, HotKeySelect=2 (F10) is now assigned to the new Full-Forward View. The hot key was originally set for 2D-clockpit by default.
      If you look at BUTTONS/KEYS under SETTINGS – CONTROLS, you will find View Camera 0 and View Camera 5 to 9 are available. You can set HotKeySelect of your new view to any of these cameras, and then assign the keystroke of your choice for it. Note to avoid using a key already assigned, unless it is no longer needed.
